Out and About in East Devon and West Dorset
Farwood Barton Holiday Cottages are situated ideally located between coast and countryside only three miles from the picturesque small town of Colyton, with its quiet winding streets and the tramway running to the coast at Seaton, through the Axe Marshes (renowned for their bird life). Colyton is approached by quiet country lanes, where you are more likely to meet a tractor than a car!
In the midst of the Blackdown hills is the market town of Honiton famous for its lace making, lies only 10 minutes away and where you will find a friendly market on Tuesdays and Saturdays. To the South lies the ‘Jurassic Coast', World Heritage Site, representing major stages of the Earth's history with rocks from the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. (More information can be obtained from www.jurassiccoast.com.) Just along the coast, lies Branscombe, with its steep-sided valleys and long beach. The quaint fishing village of Beer is a similar distance and offers a sheltered harbour and fishing trips which can be arranged from the beach. Also, worth a visit are Beer Quarry caves which cover an area equivalent to 50 football pitches.
Further to the West is the regency town of Sidmouth with its imposing sea front, nestling between high red cliffs, with the pretty Connaught Gardens and two safe beaches well worth a visit in any season.
Half an hour to the West you will find Budleigh Salterton and Exmouth with probably the longest, sandiest beach on this part of the Jurassic Coast line.
Ten miles to the East lies the West Dorset town of Lyme Regis, with the Cobb Harbour and sheltered beach. A short distance further on is Charmouth famous for its fossil beach.
Exeter with excellent road and rail links is 20 miles to the West and is famous for its cathedral and underground passages. 22 miles to the North is the Somerset county town of Taunton. To the East is Dorchester, the county town of Dorset with Maiden Castle close by (large imposing Roman earth fortifications).
